i once read a book called The Disappearance of Childhood by a fellow named Neil Postman, whose thesis was that childhood is a modern invention (1), and that it’s (2) disappearing.
One of the interesting examples he uses to support his argument is the depiction of children in art. He points to paintings where the children are depicted as miniature adults, with no childlike features or indications that they are developmentally different. He suggests that this is because people had no concept of childhood. i just think it’s because the world is filled with crummy artists.
Which brings me to this particular gem:
